Attention Far East shippers! Maersk is imposing a peak season surcharge on routes to the Americas.


Maersk announced that starting from January 6, 2025, a peak season surcharge (PSS) will be applied to all dry containers shipped from the Far East region (including Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and other countries and regions) to Mexico, Central America, the west coast of South America, and the Caribbean.

  1. Collection Time

The surcharge will gradually take effect from January 6, 2025, but the specific effective dates vary by region. For example, the surcharge for Vietnam will take effect on January 7, 2025, while the surcharge for Taiwan and other Far East regions to Colombia will take effect on January 20, 2025.

  2. Scope of Collection

The departure locations include Far East countries and regions such as Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Cambodia, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Mongolia, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc.

The destinations include Mexico, Central America, the west coast of South America, and the Caribbean.

 

  3. Surcharge Standards

20-foot dry container: $250

40-foot dry container: $500

45-foot dry container: $500

20-foot refrigerated container: $250

40-foot high refrigerated container: $500

  4. Other Related Notices

Maersk had previously issued a notice regarding the peak season surcharge for shipments from the Far East to the east coast of South America, effective from May 1, 2024; however, specific regions and effective dates vary.

Maersk has also imposed peak season surcharges on several other routes including those from the Far East to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa and more.

The imposition of this peak season surcharge may impact transportation costs for goods shipped from the Far East to Mexico, Central America, the west coast of South America and the Caribbean, increasing shipping costs for shippers.

Shippers and shipping companies need to closely monitor market dynamics and shipping company pricing policies in order to adjust transportation plans and cost budgets in a timely manner.

The collection of peak season surcharges by Maersk for shipments from the Far East to Mexico, Central America, the west coast of South America and the Caribbean is an adjustment made by shipping companies based on market conditions and transportation demand.
