Strong international seaborne container traffic at US Gateway (increased intermodal traffic)


The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) reported that increased vessel activity and intermodal traffic, combined with cargo diversion, led to the U. S.International ShippingContainer traffic is strong.

Total international imports in August reached their highest level since 2010, up 49.4 percent from August 2023. Total international exports also rose 18.5 percent, outpacing August's five-year average. Compared to August 2023, the international total increased by 45.6 percent.

NWSA's total container throughput in August reached 315,739 TEUs, up 30.1 percent year-on-year. So far this year, freight volumes are up 14.1 per cent from last year to 2,137,902 TEUs, with all imports up 22.7 per cent and all exports up 14 per cent.

Earlier this month, 16,592 TEUMaersk Alette docked at the Husky Pier in the Port of Tacoma (South), setting a record for the largest container ship to dock at the pier. It is also the first access portal for dual-fuel vessels capable of operating on green methanol.

In addition, year-to-date, grocery shipments fell 3.8 percent to a total of 298,394 tons, while motor vehicle shipments reached 237,713 units, up 10.2 percent.
