Several ports, including Ningbo, Shanghai, Manila, and Semarang, are experiencing congestion, and some ports are at risk of becoming completely blocked.

The congestion at Semarang Port is the most severe.

According to the latest information from Huijetong: At the turn of the year, due to the combined impact of customs inspections, a surge in cargo volumes, and the holiday season, several key Asian container ports—including Ningbo Port in China, Shanghai Port, Manila Port in the Philippines, and Semarang Port in Indonesia—have experienced severe congestion.

Among them, the Semarang Port in Indonesia is particularly renowned because... Severe congestion, dock Facing Risk of operational disruption!

Semarang Port, Indonesia, faces Congestion and disrupted operations due to high volumes

The waiting times for berthing in Ningbo, Shanghai, and Manila have exceeded 48 hours.

According to the latest information from Huijetong: The number of ships currently waiting to berth at Ningbo Port has increased. The average waiting time for berthing within 7 days is approximately 2.5 days. Among them, congestion at the Meishan International Container Terminal (MSICT) and the Chuanshan Container Terminal (CMICT) has further intensified. The waiting time for ships has all exceeded 3 days.

According to reports, the MSICT container yard is currently operating at a high level of saturation, with storage density exceeding 90%, which is significantly impacting the overall operational efficiency of the terminal. Both vessel turnaround and container handling operations are facing considerable pressure.

Ningbo: The 7-day average vessel waiting time is around 2.5 days. Congestion at MSICT and CMICT has worsened, with waiting times exceeding three days. MSICT is experiencing heavy yard congestion, with a density above 90%, significantly impacting overall operational efficiency.

Data shows that the overall ship waiting time at Shanghai Port remains relatively high. The 7-day average waiting time for berthing is approximately 2.13 days.

Among them, congestion at the Waigaoqiao Port Area (WGQ) terminals persists, with ships waiting approximately two days to berth. In the Yangshan Port Area (YS), due to a concentrated influx of vessels and high demand for berthing spaces, operations remained tight during Week 02, placing significant pressure on terminal operations. However, the congestion previously seen at Yangshan’s Phase I and Phase II terminals (Y1 and Y2) has eased somewhat, and overall operational efficiency has improved compared to the earlier period.

Shanghai: The 7-day average vessel waiting time is around 2.13 days. WGQ terminals continue to face berth congestion, with waiting times of 2 days. In YS, week 02 remains challenging due to vessel bunching and high berthing demand. The congestion in Y1 and Y2 has eased up.

As one of the key ports in Southeast Asia, Manila Port in the Philippines currently still faces significant overall operational pressure. The 7-day average ship waiting time is approximately 2.17 days. This figure surpasses that of the Port of Shanghai and is second only to the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan, which has an average waiting time of 2.5 days.

Among them, the congestion at Manila North Port and Manila South Port remains severe, with ships generally facing waiting times of more than three days and delays in operations. Meanwhile, the utilization rates of the two terminals’ storage yards continue to remain high, hovering consistently between approximately 85% and 90%, further tightening operational space and significantly hampering terminal operating efficiency.

In addition, the average waiting time for vessels at Guangzhou Nansha Port over the past seven days was approximately 1.49 days. Although the overall situation has improved somewhat, the terminals remain severely congested. At Qingdao Port, the average waiting time over the past seven days was about 1.34 days. During the third week, the overall situation continued to stabilize further; however, congestion at Qingdao Port’s berths persists, with typical waiting times ranging from around 1 to 1.5 days.

Indonesia's Semarang Port Faces Risk of Terminal Shutdown

According to the latest information from Huijetong: Due to a significant increase in import and export cargo volumes, Semarang Port in Indonesia has recently experienced severe congestion, disrupting port operations to varying degrees. Among them, the Tanjung Emas Terminal is facing particularly intense operational pressure.

With the continued sharp increase in import and export volumes and a severe backlog of existing cargo, the Port of Semarang in Indonesia is facing congestion and operational disruptions.

According to Hui Jie Tong Citing the latest report from Dexion, since the end of December 2025, cargo throughput at the Semarang Port has been rapidly increasing. The surge in import volumes, coupled with road traffic restrictions during the Christmas and New Year period, has led to a decline in customs clearance efficiency, resulting in a backlog that has persisted into early this year. As factories and logistics systems return to normal operations, import and export volumes have simultaneously surged, further intensifying the operational workload at the port area.

Against this backdrop, the utilization rate of terminal yards continues to rise, putting pressure on available space and gradually exposing operational bottlenecks. Meanwhile, several feeder vessel services have experienced varying degrees of late arrivals, impacting berth-handling efficiency and exacerbating delays in ship berthing.

In addition, the terminal booking system is operating close to full capacity, and customers may still be affected by unexpected factors during the operation process, such as traffic congestion on roads leading to the port or localized flooding.

To alleviate congestion, the terminal operator TPKS has implemented several measures, including expanding yard space for storing empty containers to enhance flexibility in container allocation. At the same time, the company is evaluating further utilization of quay-side resources and considering the deployment of operational facilities equipped with four quay cranes to distribute operational workload more effectively. However, in the short term, the terminal will not accept advance applications for container berthing nor process requests for early container storage.

According to SeaExplorer data, there are currently nine vessels waiting to berth at the anchorage in Semarang Port, with some of these vessels having been waiting since January 17, 2026. As of today, The above 9 vessels The waiting time has already reached 6 days!

As the Chinese Lunar New Year approaches, a new wave of rush shipments is expected to pick up soon. Foreign trade exporters and freight forwarding and logistics companies should pay close attention to the resonance effect resulting from the overlap of the pre-year shipping surge with the existing port congestion.
