According to Yi Shipping, the municipal authorities of Busan, South Korea, have designed a fire-resistant and insulated container considering the fire risk of lithium-ion batteries during transportation, hoping to ensure the safe transport of lithium batteries.

It is understood that this project is promoted through the technology development program of the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology of South Korea, which aims to address commercial challenges.

The so-called 'smart containers' equipped with blockchain technology are a response to the recent fires on container ships, where lithium batteries are suspected to be the 'culprit'.

Just in late September this year,a container with 15,000 kilograms (15 tons) of lithium batteries caught fire at the Port of Montreal in Canada,and a large plume of smoke could be seen for several kilometers around.

Earlier, in June,a fire broke out at Port Klang West, Malaysia's largest container port, destroying 14 containers,and the cause of the fire may also be related to lithium batteries..

The Busan city government stated: 'In terms of batteries, the risk of fire during transportation is very high. Therefore, if the transportation system is not well constructed, environmental pollution will continue to occur.'

'Participating companies have developed containers that protect and monitor battery status, using special materials for insulation and fire resistance, and have developed data management technology based on blockchain.'
