Good news: Panama Canal will allow heavy international ships to pass (maximum ship depth in major global waterways reset)

The canal authority said in a proposal to clients that the maximum depth of ships in the world's major waterways would be set at 47 feet (14.33 meters), effective immediately, and would deepen to 48 feet (14.63 meters) on July 11.

The Authority has also opened another transit position for Neopanamax ships with a reservation date after 5 August, bringing the total number of available positions at the Neopanamax and panamax locks to 35.

The latest changes should provide more flexibility to shippers, some of which have turned to other routes to move their cargo as the canal has suffered a series of restrictions due to drought.
