Notification of new tariff rates starting July 4th

Latest reports indicate that US President Trump stated that notification letters regarding the amount of reciprocal tariffs the US will impose on its trading partners may be sent as early as Friday (July 4th).

According to Reuters and Bloomberg, Trump told reporters on Thursday (July 3rd) while departing Washington, "We may start sending letters to our trading partners tomorrow, maybe 10 a day, telling them directly how much tariff they will pay for doing business with the US."

Trump's grace period for reciprocal tariffs will expire on July 9th.

Trump acknowledged the complexity of negotiating with over 170 countries. Before heading to Iowa for an event, he said these letters would be sent in batches of 10 countries at a time, specifying tariff rates such as 20% to 30%.

He said, "With over 170 countries, how many negotiations can be completed? These agreements are very complex."

Trump announced a trade agreement with Vietnam on Wednesday (July 2nd), and he expects the US to reach more specific agreements with "two or three more" countries.

However, he said he prefers to skip lengthy negotiations and directly notify most countries and regions of their specific tariff rates.

Trump previously threatened that if countries failed to reach agreements with the US before July 9th, he would directly set tariff rates, putting more pressure on trading partners eager to reach agreements with the US.

In early April this year, the Trump administration announced high unilateral reciprocal tariffs on many countries and regions, and then announced a 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs, giving these trading partners time to negotiate with the US and imposing a 10% benchmark tariff during the grace period.

On July 2nd, Trump announced that he had reached a trade agreement with General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyen Phu Trong,

The US will reduce tariffs on Vietnamese products to 20% ; in exchange, the Vietnamese market will be fully opened to the US.

This is the third trade agreement announced by the US, following earlier framework agreements with the UK and a temporary agreement with China to reduce tariffs mutually.
