24,000 TEU class container ship crashed into the dock

On Christmas Day, HMM ALGECIRAS (23,934 TEU), a very large container ship of HMM, suffered a major accident while docking at the port of Antwerp, knocking down one of the port's dock cranes and damaging another crane.

According to Alphaliner and local media reports, the accident occurred at the Noordzee pier operated by PSA when the bow of the HMM ALGECIRAS hit two quay Bridges on the pier, at least one of the very large quay Bridges collapsed and was severely damaged in the yard, the other was also damaged, and one of the quay Bridges was knocked down and fell into the yard.

Citing local sources, Alphaliner said the bridge was unmanned at the time, so there were no casualties and no damage to the ship was minor.

It is reported that PSA Noordzee pier is one of the two tidal piers on the right bank of the Scheldt River in the port of Antwerp, the pier shoreline is 1250 meters long, the maximum water depth is 17 meters, the design capacity of 2.6 million TEU, there are 10 super large shore Bridges and 4 medium-sized shore Bridges.

As a result of the accident, one berth at the pier will be unavailable.

Northern European winter winds and ocean currents make navigation challenging, and in December 2019, the 9,326 TEU APL MEXICO CITY was involved in a similar accident in the Port of Antwerp, when it damaged a shore bridge at DP World's Antwerp Gateway terminal.
