On April 24, local time, Yemeni Houthi spokesman Yahya Sareya announced that his naval forces had successfully carried out a number of attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, targeting US and Israeli ships and US destroyers.

According to Sareya's statement, the Houthis successfully attacked the U.S. container ship Maersk Yorktown (Maersk Yorktown), which was sailing in the Gulf of Aden, and the missiles launched accurately hit the ship.

In addition, the Houthi armed forces also claimed to have launched an attack on the Israeli container ship "Mediterranean Veracruz" (MSC Veracruz) in the Indian Ocean and successfully hit the target.

At the same time, they also attacked a US destroyer in the Gulf of Aden, but the specific time and the name of the attacked warship were not disclosed.

In the statement, Sareya emphasized that the Houthi armed forces used missiles and drones to carry out the attacks, but did not disclose the specific time of the three attacks and the name of the attacked US destroyer.

It is reported that on April 24 local time, the US container ship "Maersk Yorktown" (Maersk Yorktown) was attacked by Houthi armed forces in the Gulf of Aden.

There were 18 American and four Greek crew on board. The ship's captain reported an explosion in the water not far from the ship, but both the vessel and crew reported safe.

The UK Maritime Trade Office (UKMTO) also issued a report on the ship's attack, stating that the accident occurred 72 nautical miles east-southeast of the port of Djibouti.

The UKMTO report further confirmed the circumstances of the attack on the ship MAERSK YORKTOWN and highlighted the state of safety of the ship and crew.

Maersk later confirmed the attack on the ship, but stressed it took place more than a mile from the vessel. The company stated that all crew members on board are safe and sound. The ship will continue to sail normally under the protection of the coalition forces and will not interrupt service due to this incident.

"MAERSK YORKTOWN" IMO:9289192, flying the US flag, is a container ship built in 2004 with a capacity of 2096TEU. It is currently deployed by Maersk on the route from Salalah to Djibouti.

Data show that the "MAERSK YORKTOWN" arrived in Djibouti from Salalah Port on April 20 and left Djibouti Port on the evening of April 22, but the ship is still anchored in the waters near Djibouti.

The container ship "MSC VERACRUZ" IMO:9287924, flying the Portuguese flag, was built in 2005 with a capacity of 5060TEU. It is currently deployed by the Mediterranean Shipping MSC on the East-India route. The ship "MSC VERACRUZ" left the United States Port of Houston for Abu Dhabi on 25 March and is currently sailing in the Arabian Sea.

Since November last year, Houthi armed forces have launched attacks on more than 80 merchant ships, resulting in a large-scale diversion of maritime shipping routes from Asia to Europe. According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), from mid-December to early April, shipping volume through the Suez Canal dropped sharply, by as much as 66%.

In their latest statement, the Houthis stressed that they will continue to intercept all Israeli ships or those sailing to the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and occupied Palestinian ports until Israel stops its aggression and lifts the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Today, U.S. military authorities revealed that the Houthi operation against the 2500 TEU Maersk Yorktown, built in 2004, failed because a Western coalition warship "accurately intercepted" an anti-ship ballistic missile launched from Houthi territory.

In a subsequent statement, Sareia insisted that its organization carried out a "precision strike" against the Maersk Yorktown ". However, U.S. Central Command made it clear that despite Sareia's statement, "Maersk Yorktown" and the 18 American and four Greek crewmen it carried were safe and sound and suffered no injuries or losses.

This is the second time this month that the Houthi armed forces have tried to attack the "Maersk Yorktown" freighter, but they all failed. As an important member of the Danish shipping giant Maersk Line Co., Ltd. registered fleet in the United States, the ship has recently become the target of Houthi armed forces. On April 9, the same ship was attacked again in the same sea area. Fortunately, the launched anti-ship ballistic missile was successfully intercepted by the warship "Rab", which also did not cause any damage or casualties.

On the other hand, another vessel, the Mediterranean Veracruz, which claimed to have been attacked, still has no independent source to confirm the Houthi claim that the MSC ship was attacked. Earlier this month, Sareya claimed-also unconfirmed by other sources-that his organization carried out an attack on MSC Grace F (built in 1991) in the Indian Ocean. The alleged attack on the MSC Grace F has sparked widespread international concern that the insurgent group may indeed launch attacks on ships sailing on the high seas far from Yemen based on previous threats.

The Houthis have carried out up to 80 attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since mid-November in retaliation for Israel's US-backed military action against the Palestinian Hamas group in Gaza.
