The US is wielding its tariff stick against Canada, Mexico, and China, leading to retaliatory tariffs from the three countries.

Recently, the global trade landscape has been hit by a storm. At 1:01 PM Beijing time on a certain day, the Trump administration made a highly provocative move, officially implementing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with an additional 10% tariff on goods from China. This series of tariff measures instantly ignited the fuse of a global trade war. Faced with America's trade bullying, China, Canada, and Mexico swiftly and resolutely launched countermeasures.

The Chinese government announcedadditional tariffs of 10% and 15% on some imported goods from the US, including chicken, corn, and soybeans.

On March 4, the State Council Customs Tariff Commission issued an announcement stating that on March 3, 2025, the US government announced further 10% tariffs on all Chinese goods imported into the US under the pretext of Fentanyl. The US's unilateral tariff increases harm the multilateral trading system, increase burdens on US businesses and consumers, and damage the foundation of Sino-US economic and trade cooperation. With the approval of the State Council, tariffs will be imposed on some imported goods originating from the United States from March 10, 2025. Details are as follows:

1. A 15% tariff will be imposed on chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton.
2. A 10% tariff will be imposed on sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
3. Additional tariffs will be imposed on the imported goods listed in the appendix, based on the currently applicable tariff rates. Existing bonded warehouse and tax reduction/exemption policies remain unchanged, and the tariffs imposed this time will not be reduced or exempted.
4. Goods that have been shipped from the place of shipment before March 10, 2025, and imported between March 10, 2025 and April 12, 2025, will not be subject to the additional tariffs stipulated in this announcement.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau also resolutely stated on Monday evening that if the US tariffs come into effect, Canada would retaliate by imposing a 25% tariff on US goods. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum similarly indicated that Mexico had a response plan, and the entire country was united. The strong response from the three countries left the US facing a situation of being "gang beaten".

Mexican President Sheinbaum stated that in response to the US government's tariff measures, she has instructed the Mexican Ministry of Economy to take retaliatory tariff and non-tariff measures to defend Mexican interests.

Canada chose to "fight fire with fire." Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of US goods imported into Canada in response to the US tariffs on Canadian goods.

A turning point appeared on February 3. Trump stated that he had a "very friendly conversation" with Sheinbaum and announced a 30-day suspension of the tariff measures imposed by both countries and a continuation of negotiations.

Mexico agreed to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to the Mexican-American border, who would be specifically responsible for preventing fentanyl and illegal immigration from entering the United States.

Trump also said that Canada had agreed to ensure the security of America's northern border and ultimately end the massive influx of deadly drugs like fentanyl into the United States. He was "very satisfied" with the preliminary results reached by both sides.

The actions of the Trump administration fully exposed its arrogant and overbearing mentality. They seem to regard the US as the master of the world, believing that almost all countries are "taking advantage of the US." However, from an economic data perspective, the US had a per capita GDP of $82,800 in 2023, far exceeding Canada's $53,400, the EU's $41,400, and Japan's $33,800, and even several times that of China and Mexico. Even so, the US economic strength is not invincible.

While the US controls some core technologies in semiconductors and holds a significant position in the information industry, the Trump team clearly overestimated the overall strength of the US economy. Apart from semiconductors and the military industry, the US economy is mediocre in other areas. For a long time, the US has relied on its dominant position in the world economic system, particularly the advantage of the US dollar as the international currency, to continuously reap global benefits, achieving wealth that is disproportionate to its actual economic condition.

Today, the Trump team's greed has become increasingly inflated, attempting to further exploit countries worldwide and conduct extreme plunder of the international system. However, they have not realized that this behavior is undermining the international system that is most beneficial to the US. Countries around the world will not sit idly by and will inevitably respond forcefully to US hegemonic actions in various ways and means.

The Trump administration's trade policy has serious logical flaws. On the one hand, they want to achieve a US trade surplus; on the other hand, they want to maintain the dollar's global hegemony. But they have ignored a basic economic law: the US's long-term trade deficit has led to the outflow of newly printed dollars globally, becoming the trade currency between other countries. Once the US turns into a trade surplus country, the external dollars will flow back into the US on a large scale, and the status and role of the US dollar as an international currency will inevitably be weakened. The Trump team's idea of wanting both fish and bear's paw is ultimately just a pipe dream.

Trade conflicts have broken out between the US, Canada, and Mexico, and Europe is also facing the threat of US tariffs. Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs means that the vast majority of US allies and developing countries will become targets of its trade strikes. History has proven that a country that attempts to make enemies of the whole world will ultimately not have a good outcome. The Trump team clearly underestimated the strength and determination of countries worldwide to retaliate, and the US will inevitably face collective global resistance in this trade war.

In this trade war, China has maintained a firm stance, refusing to accept any form of pressure or threats. China will work with countries around the world to jointly address US trade bullying and uphold a fair, just, and reasonable international trade order. The US hegemonic dream will ultimately shatter under the joint struggle of countries worldwide.

The smoke of trade war has spread, and the direction of future global trade patterns is worth our continued attention. However, it is certain that any attempt to undermine the global trade order will be judged by history.
