Multiple international shipping ports in Australia will go on strike (cross-border e-commerce sellers exporting to Australia, please take note)

Strikes at major Australian ports will continue due to ongoing disputes between union workers and Qube Ports over contract negotiations.

Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Gladstone, Melbourne, and Kembla Port will be shut down.

On Monday, union members held a one-day strike at 10 ports nationwide, but they have been conducting sporadic lower-level strike actions across Australia since September.

Upcoming industrial actions will affect ports handling bulk goods such as grain, steel, and machinery. Additionally, all participating port workers plan to conduct an eight-hour stoppage when vessels are docked.

Qube's main coal, grain, and fertilizer operations at Kembla Port in Wollongong will face 13 rolling stoppages from December 20 to January 3.

The dispute between the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and Qube Ports has been ongoing since the breakdown of contract negotiations in April 2024. The MUA accuses Qube of deliberately stalling negotiations and has been calling for government intervention to prevent the company from bypassing collective bargaining.

Qube has offered employees an 18% pay increase over four years, but the union is also seeking changes to current scheduling rules that would require the company to set shift times by 4 PM the day before workers are scheduled to work. They are also requesting changes to fatigue management rules to prevent company managers from assigning dangerous work patterns.

Maritime safety consultancy Crisis24 warns: 'If the MUA extends the strike duration or expands its scope, delays in cargo loading and unloading could lead to disruptions in the supply chain throughout January.'
