On July 9 (Tuesday), a container ship owned by CMA CGM suffered a bad day off the coast of South Africa, causing 44 containers to fall into the water and 30 containers to be damaged. The "CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin" was en route from Asia (China) to Europe with a full load of cargo at the time of the accident.
The ship issued a statement on July 11 informing it of the maritime accident. The statement stated that on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Dafei's "CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin" container ship encountered sudden extreme weather off the coast of South Africa on its westward journey from Asia to Europe, causing 44 on board. The container unfortunately fell into the sea and lost, while another 30 containers were damaged to varying degrees.
This week, the harsh conditions in the waters near the Cape of Good Hope were particularly severe, with wave heights exceeding 10 meters, posing a serious threat to shipping safety. The South African Transnet Company also announced on Tuesday that it has temporarily closed some port operations due to strong winds and huge waves.
Despite the heavy losses, Dafei confirmed that the crew was safe during the incident, and there was no environmental pollution or serious damage to the ship. The ship is still in good seaworthiness. After thorough inspection and evaluation, it is confirmed that all lost containers are loaded with harmless goods, excluding any potential risk of dangerous goods leakage.
In order to fully understand and deal with the incident, Dafei has immediately informed the relevant departments and plans to send a team to Cape Town for a detailed on-site assessment. At the same time, the company stated that it will take all necessary and relevant measures to ensure the safety of subsequent maritime navigation.
For the customers affected by the incident, Dafei promised to contact the customers affected by the incident one by one, share the accident information in time, and provide maximum support and help in the follow-up process.
It is reported that the "CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin" container ship (IMO:9706891) was built in 2015, flying the Maltese flag and having a capacity of 17859TEU. It serves the French Asia Line 1(FAL) route of the Ocean Alliance-Dafei ship. Due to the security situation in the Red Sea region, the route was temporarily adjusted and chose to bypass the Cape of Good Hope.
It is worth noting that the round was attached to Ningbo Port on June 14-16, Shanghai Port on June 16-18, and Yantian Port on June 21. The ship is currently sailing to Cape Town in order to unload or re-load the damaged containers for safe resumption of navigation.
Huijietong warm reminder: there are goods loaded on the ship's freight forwarder attention, timely attention to the shipping company news, understand the damage to the goods and ship delay.
